What’s your mood mocktail?

You know how certain fragrances remind you of moments or even people? Like how the smell of rain-soaked earth takes you back to childhood summers or the scent of vanilla makes you think of warm, comforting hugs? For me, it’s not just fragrances—it’s also mocktails.

I’ve realized that I instinctively order drinks based on my mood. If I’m feeling adventurous, I’ll go for a zesty mojito with an extra splash of lime. On tough days, it’s my all-time favorite, a classic virgin mojito, to help me unwind. It’s like each drink has a personality, and it matches the way I’m feeling at the moment.

That got me thinking: if people’s moods or personalities could be smelled like fragrances, what mocktail would I associate with them? Here’s my playful take on the “Mood Mocktail” menu for life:

1. The “I Know It All” (The Ego)

• Fragrance: Sharp and bold, like say… spicy black pepper or bergamot.

• Mocktail Match: Ginger-Lime Spritzer

This is for the one who walks into the room with an air of confidence (or overconfidence perhaps?). The lime gives them a refreshing zing, but it’s the bold kick of ginger that mirrors their strong, sometimes overwhelming, personality. They’re the ones who’ll confidently tell you how to “properly” hold your glass.

2. The Happy-Go-Lucky (The Optimist)

• Fragrance: Sunny and bright, like pineapples and fresh coconuts.

• Mocktail Match: Pina Colada

This person is a walking vacation. They’re all about good vibes, contagious laughter, and seeing the silver lining. A creamy, tropical pina colada fits them perfectly—it’s a drink that says, “Relax, life’s too short to stress.”

3. The Cranky or Pessimist

• Fragrance: Earthy and moody, like wet soil or oud.

• Mocktail Match: Dark Chocolate Espresso Mocktail

This is the person who needs a drink that understands their depth. Bittersweet dark chocolate mixed with a shot of espresso mirrors their glass half-empty nature. It’s the perfect companion for when they’re muttering about life’s unfairness—but secretly savoring the flavor.

4. The Romantic

• Fragrance: Sweet and dreamy, like roses and strawberries.

• Mocktail Match: Strawberry-Basil Lemonade

For the ones who live to love, this drink is their soulmate. Sweet, rosy strawberries paired with the subtle dash of basil create a drink that’s as heartwarming and layered as their emotions. It’s the kind of drink you sip slowly while gazing into someone’s eyes.

5. The Miss Too-Goody-Shoes (The Saint)

• Fragrance: Fresh and calming, like lavender and cucumber.

• Mocktail Match: Cucumber-Elderflower Spritz

You know this person—they’re always calm, always kind, always doing the “right” thing. Their mocktail of choice is delicate and refreshing, just like their personality. It’s the drink that whispers, “Life is cool.”

6. The Angry Young Man (The Rebel)

• Fragrance: Spicy and intense, like chilli.

• Mocktail Match: Guava-Chili Mocktail

The rebel doesn’t do subtle. Their drink has to be as fiery and unapologetic as they are. The guava’s vibrant red color screams passion, while the chili kick reminds you that they’re not here to play nice. A sip of this, and you’ll know they mean business.

And Me?

I like the smell of a chocolate espresso or a pina colada, but, I’m a virgin mojito kind of person, through and through. I am a realist - neither a pessimist nor an optimist. The mint refreshes my mind, the lime adds a touch of zing, and the fizz reminds me to keep things light and bubbly. It’s the drink I turn to on tough days, adventurous days, and everything in between—because no matter the mood, it’s a reminder that life can be simple yet full of flavor.
