J: Juxtaposition

The Vocabulary of Life is an A–Z journey through the unspoken.

Inspired by my toddler’s wonder and his relentless curiosity for "why," I’m exploring 26 days of word-nerd gems and sensory wonders that name the feelings we often share but can’t always describe. Whether you're a parent, a dreamer, or a seeker, there’s a word here for you.

I remember a morning last week when I was trying to have a "professional" moment. I was on a call with a colleague, using my most composed, corporate voice to discuss project timelines and targets. Meanwhile, just inches away, my son was intensely busy with his own high-stakes mission: seeing if his favorite plastic toy car could successfully submerge like a submarine in a bowl of warm soup. My serious, "working-mom" face was sitting right next to a splashing yellow SUV and a stray piece of carrot.

That state of being placed close together with a contrasting effect is called Juxtaposition.

In the world of "Word-Nerds," juxtaposition is a tool used to highlight the differences between two things by putting them side by side. Juxtaposition is my daily reality. It is the corporate jargon of a meeting sitting on the table next to the soggy toy wheels. It is the quiet focus needed for a work call meeting the loud, splashy joy of a toddler who just discovered that a bowl of broth makes an excellent ocean. We often think life has to be one thing or the other—either a career professional or a mother—but juxtaposition shows us that the most resilient lives are both at the same time.

Watching my son, I see that he is the master of juxtaposition. He can be crying about a "sinking" car one second and then offering me a drippy, broth-covered hug the next, right as I’m saying "Let's touch base on Monday." He doesn't see the contrast as a conflict; he just sees it as Tuesday. His ability to find the adventure in the middle of the mess is something I am trying to learn from. My life is a mix of professional checklists and kitchen table chaos, and juxtaposition is the thread that sews the "serious" and the "splashy" together.

Have you ever had a moment where your "work life" and your "soup life" collided? What is the most surprising juxtaposition in your house today?

Tomorrow: for the letter K, we explore a Yiddish word for the pride that makes a mother’s heart swell. See you for Kvel.

  1. Hahaha! I enjoy such witty juxtaposed situations. Kudos to you for seeing the fun in life even as you go about the tough combination of corporate life and motherhood.

  2. That was so relatable. My toddler is in the phase of experimenting things on her own and I thoroughly enjoy the chaos and mess (of course sometimes I question my sanity) but managing work and toddler's exploration is a new balancing game I am learning.
