K: Kvell
The Vocabulary of Life is an A–Z journey through the unspoken.
Inspired by my toddler’s wonder and his relentless curiosity for "why," I’m exploring 26 days of word-nerd gems and sensory wonders that name the feelings we often share but can’t always describe. Whether you're a parent, a dreamer, or a seeker, there’s a word here for you.
I remember watching my son at the playground recently. He was standing at the base of a climbing frame that, just a month ago, seemed like a mountain to him. I held my breath as he reached for the first bar, his little brow crinkled in concentration (that Glabella we talked about!). When he finally pulled himself up and looked back at me with a triumphant grin, I felt a sudden, warm expansion in my chest. It was a pride so thick it felt like I might actually burst into tears of joy right there on the woodchips.
That feeling of beaming with immense pride, especially in the achievements of one's children, is called to Kvell.
In the world of "Word-Nerds," kvell comes from the Yiddish word "kveln," which literally means to swell or well up. It is different from ordinary pride; it’s an involuntary, overflowing emotion. In 2026, every milestone my son reaches—whether it’s climbing a ladder or finally learning to remove his own shoes —is a victory for both of us. Each time I kvell, it is a reminder of why I fought so hard through my recovery. My son’s growth is the living proof of the future we are building together.
Watching my son, I realize that he is the source of my greatest "Tiny Wins." When I am tired from medical follow-ups or work meetings, seeing him master a new skill gives me a second wind. He doesn't know he’s doing anything extraordinary; he’s just being a curious toddler. But as I stand there, literally swelling with joy, I realize that kvelling is the heart’s way of saying "this was all worth it." It is the emotional fuel that keeps me moving through the A–Z of this beautiful, complicated life.
Do you remember the last time you felt like your heart might burst with pride for someone else? What was the moment that made you want to kvell?
Tomorrow: for the letter L, we explore a word for the way certain sounds can trigger a deep, comforting memory. See you for Logolepsy!
