R: Resonance
The Vocabulary of Life is an A–Z journey through the unspoken.
Inspired by my toddler’s wonder and his relentless curiosity for "why," I’m exploring 26 days of word-nerd gems and sensory wonders that name the feelings we often share but can’t always describe. Whether you're a parent, a dreamer, or a seeker, there’s a word here for you.
Living in a foreign country, we have found our own little rituals to make the unfamiliar feel like home. One of our favorites is walking toward the nearby church just as the clock strikes the hour. I remember standing with my son as the massive bell began to swing. When the first strike hit, the sound didn't just fill the air—it seemed to vibrate the very pavement beneath our feet. My son immediately pressed his palms against a nearby stone wall, his eyes widening as he felt the hum travel through the rock and into his hands. "It’s shivering in my tummy, Mama!" he laughed. He wasn't just hearing a bell; he was experiencing the physical afterlife of the sound.
That quality of a sound or a feeling that deepens and lingers, vibrating through a space or a person, is called Resonance.
In the world of "Word-Nerds," resonance is about more than just volume. It comes from the Latin resonare, meaning to sound back. It describes the way one vibration can set off another. We feel it when we hear a piece of music that seems to "hit" us in the heart, or when we encounter a thought that stays with us for days. It’s a sensory bridge. It’s the difference between a noise that just passes through the air and a sound that settles into your bones and stays there.
Watching my son lean into the vibration of that church bell, I realized how much of our lives we spend just skimming the surface of things. We hear, but we don't always stop to feel the vibration. Resonance is a reminder to stay long enough for the hum to reach us. It’s about finding those people, places, and words that "sound back" to our own hearts. When we find resonance, we aren't just observers of the world anymore; we are part of its music.
What is something that has had a deep resonance for you lately? Is it a song, a conversation, or perhaps a memory that still vibrates in your mind when the world gets quiet?
Tomorrow: for the letter S, we explore a word for that specific, mesmerizing play of light on water. See you for Scintilla!
